Zcash NU7 Upgrade Activates: Faster Blocks, New Tokenomics, and the Road to Tachyon

Zcash's NU7 upgrade activates with 25-second block times, shielded transaction caps, a new fee reserve for future mining rewards, and the retirement of the Sprout pool. The upgrade aims to make Zcash more usable as digital cash while paving the way for the Tachyon redesign.

Zcash NU7 Goes Live

Zcash activated its major network upgrade, NU7, at block height 3,543,405. The upgrade introduces faster block times, shielded transaction limits, a new fee allocation model, and the retirement of legacy infrastructure. It arrives as ZEC has outperformed major cryptocurrencies following the U.S. midterm elections, where Democrats regained both chambers of Congress.

What NU7 Changes

NU7 implements four key changes:

  • Faster payments: Block target time reduced from 75 seconds to 25 seconds (ZIP-218), enabling first confirmation in about 25 seconds and tripling raw throughput.
  • Scalability guardrails: A per-block cap on shielded transactions prevents network overload while allowing Orchard-type shielded capacity to grow roughly 2.3x.
  • New tokenomics: 60% of transaction fees are diverted to a reserve that will supplement future mining rewards starting around February 2031 (ZIP-235).
  • Legacy retirement: v4 transaction format is disabled, effectively retiring the original Sprout shielded pool (ZIP-2003). About 12,200 ZEC remain in Sprout and may become unspendable.

Industry Implications

The faster block time brings Zcash closer to its original vision of usable digital cash, improving exchange deposits and cross-chain transfers. The fee reserve addresses the long-term security budget problem as block rewards halve, without altering the 21 million cap or the halving schedule. The retirement of Sprout reduces protocol complexity and security risk. However, the upgrade alone does not solve the core challenge: scaling privacy-preserving transactions to mainstream payment volumes.

Forward-Looking Perspective

The next major engineering effort is Tachyon, a redesign of Zcash’s cryptography that aims to aggregate zero-knowledge proofs and reduce node storage burdens, potentially raising throughput ceilings and paving the way for post-quantum privacy. No activation date has been set. Other work includes privacy-preserving information retrieval for wallets and faster block propagation. NU7 buys Zcash time until Tachyon can remove the remaining bottlenecks. Until then, the best outcome is sustaining the current momentum.
