Circle Q3: Token Sale Inflates Revenue, USDC Growth Stalls

Circle's Q3 revenue was boosted by a one-time $182 million ARC token pre-sale, but excluding it, revenue fell 7.7% YoY. USDC circulation growth slowed to 8% and declined sequentially, while reserve income dropped 8%, raising concerns about the core stablecoin business.

Circle Q3: Token Sale Inflates Revenue, USDC Growth Stalls

Circle Internet Financial reported third-quarter revenue of $865 million and net income of $226 million, but a one-time $182 million pre-sale of ARC tokens accounted for more than the entire revenue increase. Excluding that sale, revenue declined 7.7% year-over-year, while USDC average circulation grew just 8% and fell sequentially, and reserve income dropped 8%.

The ARC Boost: A Double-Edged Sword

The ARC token pre-sale, which generated $182 million, was a major contributor to Circle’s top-line growth. However, this is a non-recurring item that masks underlying weakness in the core stablecoin business. Investors should be cautious about extrapolating this revenue surge into future quarters.

USDC Under Pressure

USDC’s average circulating supply increased only 8% year-over-year and declined quarter-over-quarter. This stagnation is concerning given the overall growth in the stablecoin market, where competitors like Tether’s USDT continue to expand. Circle’s reserve income, which is highly sensitive to interest rates, fell 8% as the Federal Reserve’s rate cuts reduced the yield on its Treasury holdings.

Competitive Landscape and Strategic Moves

Circle faces intensifying competition from both traditional stablecoin issuers and new entrants, including banking giants and fintech firms exploring tokenized deposits. The company’s recent partnership with Binance and its expansion into new markets are strategic efforts to boost USDC adoption. However, the lack of organic growth in circulation suggests these initiatives have yet to yield significant results.

Forward-Looking Perspective

Circle’s Q3 results highlight the challenges of relying on non-recurring revenue to drive growth. The company must demonstrate sustainable expansion in USDC circulation and diversify its revenue streams beyond reserve income. With the stablecoin market evolving rapidly and regulatory clarity improving, Circle’s ability to innovate and capture market share will be critical. Investors will look for signs of organic growth in the coming quarters, especially as interest rates remain a headwind.
