Arthur Hayes Warns AI Super-IPOs Will Implode Under Dilution, Dragging Crypto Down
Cointime reports: BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes has issued a stark warning: the impending public listings of SpaceX, Anthropic and OpenAI are structurally set up to disappoint investors, and their likely post-IPO declines will tighten credit conditions and drain the fiat liquidity that crypto markets depend on.
The Dilution Math
Hayes argues that these companies will float only a small slice of shares while massive insider unlocks loom. He estimates SpaceX faces roughly 50% additional dilution by mid-2027, Anthropic up to 83%, and OpenAI a similarly brutal overhang. Even if market capitalization rises, per-share prices can stagnate or fall—a distinction he says many investors miss. With no dividends and cash consumed by capital expenditure, the supply of new stock will overwhelm demand.
Why Stock Prices Matter for AI Debt
These firms need access to corporate bond markets to fund hundreds of billions in compute infrastructure. Public equity prices serve as the market’s only objective scorecard for AI viability. If shares sink below IPO prices due to insider selling, credit spreads will widen, borrowing costs will surge, and the reflexive feedback loop will undermine the entire AI narrative—regardless of whether the technology ultimately succeeds.
The Crypto Transmission Channel
Hayes explains that bank balance sheet expansion has fueled both the AI bubble and the recent crypto rally. If AI credit markets freeze, bank lending and securities financing will contract, reducing dollar liquidity. The Federal Reserve, he notes, is currently unwilling to expand its balance sheet, leaving commercial banks to create credit. A contraction there would remove a key support for crypto prices.
Patience Is the Play
Hayes says his family office, Maelstrom, is sitting on the sidelines, waiting for the AI super-IPOs to buckle under dilution pressure. He expects a broader financial crisis will eventually force central banks to print money, which would be enormously bullish for bitcoin and crypto. Until then, he advises patience, noting that falling compute prices will accelerate AI agent adoption and benefit projects like FLOP Network and Genlayer.
The bottom line: Hayes sees public-market scrutiny as the force that will expose the AI bubble’s fragile financing structure, and crypto investors should prepare for the liquidity shock that follows—and the rescue that will come after.
