Anthropic IPO Still on SEC Docket, But $500B Valuation Haircut and $895B Compute Tab Spook Wall Street

Anthropic's IPO remains on file with the SEC, but a debunked cancellation rumor, three Claude Code departures, a $500 billion valuation cut, and $895 billion in compute commitments have Wall Street questioning the AI burn-and-scale model. OpenAI's funding round is also shrinking, signaling a broader reset.

Anthropic’s IPO Is Still Alive — But the AI Bubble It Rode In On Is Deflating

Anthropic’s IPO has not been withdrawn. The company’s S-1 and amended S-1/A remain on file with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and a quiet investor-relations subdomain has gone live. But a viral social-media post claiming the listing had been canceled — swiftly debunked — landed at the worst possible moment: just days before a global roadshow was set to begin the week of Nov. 9. The rumor mattered less than what it revealed. Capital markets are losing patience with the AI trade.

Key Talent Exits Land Between Filing and Roadshow

In the two weeks before the planned listing, three senior figures from the Claude Code team — Anthony Morris, Thariq Shihipar, and Cat Wu — departed. Claude Code is not a side project; Anthropic’s own prospectus identifies it as central to enterprise monetization. The timing, wedged between the S-1 filing and the roadshow, gives institutional investors a fresh reason to question retention risk at the very moment they are being asked to underwrite the story.

Growth Deceleration and a Swing to Operating Losses

The financial disclosures are harder to spin. Third-quarter revenue reached $16.96 billion, but sequential growth slowed to roughly 47% from 144% in the prior quarter. Anthropic also conceded about $600 million in discounts and price cuts to defend market share; adding that back lifts growth only to about 52%. More damaging, the company swung from $974 million in positive operating income in Q2 to a GAAP operating loss of $567 million in Q3. Bloomberg reported that underwriters have been forced to guide a valuation range of $1.4 trillion to $1.5 trillion, down from private-market marks near $2 trillion — a $500 billion haircut.

The $895 Billion Compute Overhang

The balance-sheet item that truly rattles investors is $895.4 billion in purchase and lease commitments, overwhelmingly for cloud and chip infrastructure. Of that, $447.5 billion must be paid by the end of 2030, and $69.8 billion falls due within the next twelve months. Blackstone has warned that post-IPO credit ratings are likely to land in junk territory, which would raise borrowing costs precisely when the company needs cheap capital to service that stack. The message from Wall Street is blunt: convert GPUs into net income, or the funding window closes.

Contagion Is Already Spreading to OpenAI

The chill is not contained to one issuer. OpenAI’s latest round was reportedly scaled back to $20 billion from a $30 billion target, with valuation slipping to $1.25 trillion from $1.4 trillion. By the Oct. 30 subscription deadline, commitments totaled only about $11 billion, forcing a retail-style follow-on pitch to family offices and high-net-worth individuals to close a near-$10 billion gap. The three-year AI fervor is meeting its first real test of cash discipline. For crypto markets, the read-through is direct: decentralized compute and AI-agent token narratives that leaned on hyperscaler capex enthusiasm now face a valuation reset, and any AI-adjacent digital-asset treasury or IPO proxy will trade on the same scrutiny of burn rates and payback periods.

What to Watch

The procedural IPO remains intact, but its foundation has cracked. Mid-November will reveal whether Anthropic can reprice the story around enterprise stickiness and margin trajectory rather than scale alone. If the roadshow stumbles, expect a broader repricing of AI infrastructure commitments across public and on-chain markets alike.
