Scroll Abandons General-Purpose L2 Model
Cointime reports: Scroll, the Ethereum zero-knowledge rollup once hailed as a top-tier L2, has announced plans to transform its public chain into a private application-specific network centered on its AI product suite, Compass. The transition, outlined in a governance forum update, is expected to take about nine months. The SCR token will migrate to Ethereum mainnet with unchanged tokenomics, retaining governance functions and potentially expanding into staking.
The move comes as on-chain activity has collapsed. Scroll now processes roughly 9,700 daily transactions from 584 daily active addresses, generating just $41.78 in daily on-chain revenue—down 75.6% week-over-week and ranking 21st among 27 tracked chains. DefiLlama pegs its TVL at approximately $3.6 million. SCR has plunged over 98% from its December 2024 all-time high of $1.43, now trading between $0.019 and $0.02.
A Broader L2 Washout
Scroll is not alone. Sophon, also built on ZK Stack, will permanently shut down its mainnet on November 30, with asset withdrawals closing November 25. Having raised about $70 million and sold 121,000 nodes, Sophon plans to build consumer apps on Base while keeping its SOPH token alive on Ethereum and Base. Abstract, operated by Pudgy Penguins parent Igloo Inc., will close its chain on December 15; CEO Luca Netz acknowledged an eight-figure operating loss. The stated reasons—thin liquidity, limited DeFi activity, scant institutional participation, and rising competition—underscore the unsustainability of standalone chain operations.
The Economics Don’t Work
The structural problem is simple: L2 revenue comes from transaction fees, minus L1 data costs and ZK proof generation expenses, leaving razor-thin margins. Scroll’s $42 daily revenue cannot cover a single engineer’s salary, let alone proving costs. Sophon estimated annual operating costs above $3 million for its independent L2. Base, by contrast, benefits from Coinbase’s user funnel and brand背书—a cold-start advantage most L2s cannot replicate. Without such backing, many general-purpose L2s are effectively subsidizing on-chain activity with venture funding that will not last forever.
What It Means for SCR Holders
For SCR holders, the pivot brings two direct implications. First, the token migration to Ethereum mainnet preserves supply and governance but shifts value accrual from general L2 transaction activity to governance and usage demand within a private AI network—neither of which currently has verifiable revenue data. Second, the network’s nature changes from open public infrastructure to a permissioned private environment. The transition details will be submitted to the DAO for review once confirmed, but the direction is clear: the era of the general-purpose L2 as a standalone business is closing.
