Democrats Win Congress, Putting Trump Family Crypto Ventures Under Scrutiny
Cointime reports: The US midterm elections have delivered control of both chambers of Congress to the Democrats, ending Republican dominance and casting a shadow over a sprawling network of crypto and business ventures tied to President Donald Trump and his allies. Markets reacted swiftly, with Trump-branded digital assets and related equities selling off sharply as investors reassessed the political risk premium embedded in these projects.
World Liberty Financial Faces Investigations and Legal Battles
World Liberty Financial (WLFI), the Trump family-backed crypto finance project that issues the WLFI governance token and USD1 stablecoin, saw its token drop 11.5% from a recent high of $0.052 to $0.046 before recovering slightly to $0.04767. The project now faces heightened congressional scrutiny. Incoming House Oversight Committee Chairman Robert Garcia has vowed to investigate what he calls “Trump family corruption,” including crypto businesses that generated over $1 billion for the president, business dealings of Donald Trump Jr., and arrangements involving Jared Kushner’s board roles and contracts. Garcia also plans to examine a pardon granted to a Binance co-founder who helped the family launch its stablecoin and has asked the Pentagon Inspector General to probe defense contracts linked to Eric and Donald Trump Jr.
WLFI is also entangled in civil litigation. On November 4, Justin Sun and affiliated entities filed a sanctions motion in the Northern District of California, seeking $263,821.20 in legal fees tied to a fraud suit alleging WLFI induced purchases of tens of millions of dollars in tokens under a 2024 token purchase agreement. A hearing is set for December 10.
Meme Coins and Trump Media Suffer Sharp Losses
The TRUMP meme coin fell 28.7% from $1.74 to $1.24, while MELANIA dropped a similar 28.7% from $0.087 to $0.062. Trump Media & Technology Group (DJT) slid 25.2% from around $6 to $4.49. Notably, on November 5, Trump Media transferred 4,259 BTC worth approximately $343.67 million to Crypto.com. These bitcoins had been pledged as collateral for convertible bonds, and a securities filing warns that bondholders could demand repayment of up to $1 billion by November 30, potentially forcing the company to sell digital assets.
Musk’s Empire Also Takes a Hit
Elon Musk, the largest individual donor of the cycle with nearly $500 million spent supporting Republican candidates, saw his companies impacted. SpaceX’s stock fell 7.8% and Tesla dropped 7.9%. With Republicans losing the Senate Appropriations Committee chairmanship—which oversees NASA and Defense budgets—SpaceX’s government contracts could face headwinds. Dogecoin, however, showed resilience, trading at $0.07704 after a brief dip.
Outlook: Political Risk Becomes a Crypto Variable
The election results introduce a new layer of political risk for crypto assets tied to personalities. While the broader crypto market has not shown systemic contagion, the coming two years will require close attention to Democratic policy positions, bipartisan legislative cooperation on crypto rules, and whether congressional investigations into Trump family crypto businesses escalate. For investors, the message is clear: political narrative cuts both ways.
