AI Trade Suffers Historic Stress Test as Nasdaq Posts Largest Single-Day Market Cap Loss

A political shift in Washington and state capitals triggered a $2.5 trillion selloff in US tech stocks, with the Nasdaq posting its largest single-day market cap loss ever. Investors are now questioning the sustainability of AI infrastructure spending as data center approvals face new hurdles.

A $2.5 Trillion Wipeout Rattles Wall Street

US equities suffered a broad selloff on Thursday, with the technology sector bearing the brunt as investors reassessed the sustainability of the AI-driven rally. The Nasdaq Composite plunged 5.52% to 24,315, entering technical correction territory and marking the index’s largest single-day market cap loss on record—an estimated $2.5 trillion. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1,833.06 points, or 3.44%, to 51,523.06, while the S&P 500 dropped 4.36% to 7,353.73. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index recorded its worst one-day decline since the darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Political Shift Upends AI Infrastructure Bets

The trigger was not a single earnings miss or macro data point but a political realignment. Following the midterm elections, Democrats regained control of Congress, and several governors who campaigned on restricting data center construction were elected. Texas—home to the largest pipeline of planned data centers in the US—became the focal point after Democratic Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa signaled that a moratorium on new data center approvals should remain until the state legislature passes “real protections” next year. Investors had previously assumed that Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s pause on data center approvals was a pre-election gesture that would be reversed. That assumption is now being challenged, forcing a re-rating of project timelines and revenue expectations across the AI supply chain.

From Supply Chain Divergence to Broad Capitulation

What began as pressure on chipmakers, contractors, and infrastructure providers quickly spread to the entire market. The “Magnificent Seven” collectively shed roughly $1 trillion in market value, with Nvidia (NVDA.O) tumbling 9.26% and turning negative for the year. Tesla (TSLA.O) and SpaceX-linked names fell more than 9% on concerns over policy and political risk. Notably, every S&P 500 sector closed lower—a sign that the usual rotation into defensive areas failed to materialize. Amazon (AMZN.O) and Alphabet (GOOGL.O) had already disappointed with earnings, and concerns over debt-funded expansion added to the unease.

Leverage and Mechanical Selling Amplify the Drop

The selloff was exacerbated by market structure. Retail investors were on track for the largest single-day net selling since the pandemic. Programmatic trading and options hedging accelerated the decline, while systematic hedge funds joined the fray as losses mounted. Leveraged products magnified the pain: the Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X ETF, which seeks 300% of the daily performance of the NYSE Semiconductor Index, plunged 39% in a single session. “When market momentum turns against investors, especially with leveraged trades, it can trigger extremely violent selling,” noted Mike Bell of RBC BlueBay Asset Management. “Sometimes the market falls because people are selling; sometimes people sell because the market is falling.”

Forward Outlook: A Reckoning for AI Valuations

The $2.5 trillion question is whether this is a healthy correction or the start of a deeper de-rating. The AI trade had been built on the premise that hyperscalers and chipmakers could sustain extraordinary profit growth through 2027. That premise now faces political, financing, and timeline risks. With earnings forecasts for next year no longer reliable, investors may demand a higher risk premium for AI exposure. The crypto market, increasingly correlated with tech equities, could face spillover pressure—particularly in AI-adjacent tokens and mining stocks. The coming weeks will test whether policy clarity emerges or whether the market’s support continues to erode.
